Selecting an accountable Systems Integrator is a practical problem faced by agencies for every project. Integration of any modern technology (i.e., train control, IT, elevator control, HVAC, TVS, Traction Power, Fare Collection, PA, CCTV…) into a transit agency presents challenges that involve considerable risk to the agency. Technology is evolving faster than typical project lifecycles. Integration of technology into agency subsystems is where failures typically occur because the technology likely worked ‘as expected’ on the supplier test bench. Often the acquiring agency becomes the “defacto systems” integrator when the various contractors are finished – the agency has to make it all work in the end! This tutorial defines systems integration and shows you how to intentionally execute systems integration or when to bring in an independent integration expert.
